General Music For All Grades

1st Grade General Music

In 1st grade general music, students are introduced to several important musical concepts including steady beats, melodic direction, and musical dynamics. As the year progresses, students will explore short and long sounds as well as high and low sounds. By the end of the year, students will be reading and composing with simple rhythm and pitch notation.
Students will experience music through movement, critical listening, singing, and playing instruments, including xylophones, drums, rhythm sticks, and unpitched percussion instruments (tambourines, triangles, etc.)

In these small ensembles, students develop singing skills and instrument techniques playing instruments including drums, recorders, and xylophones. Students will compose, notate, and perform original pieces of music throughout the year using an expanding repertoire of rhythms and pitches. An emphasis is placed on self- and group-evaluation to develop critical listening skills and to help students improve their own performances.
