Hello,
My name is Kalani Chavez. I am the school counselor at Doña Merced Elementary. Starting school is an exciting, yet challenging time for both parents and students. It is at this time when children learn independence and responsibility. It is also a time when students develop peer relationships, character, become individuals and have personal and social difficulties. I am here to provide all students and families with addressing personal and social concerns.

My main goal is to support children’s social and emotional needs. I want to build positive relationships and teach children to problem solve. My philosophy is student-centered focus. I provide all students guidance through their transition from starting school to elementary transition into middle school. I work with students individually, in groups and in classrooms. It is my goal to connect all students to Doña in a positive way. I am always available to conference with students and parents.

At Doña, all staff members work together with parents and the community, to create a caring, supportive climate, and atmosphere where young children can achieve academic and personal success.

THE GOAL OF THE SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM

The goal of the School Counseling Program at Doña Merced Elementary School is to provide comprehensive services to all students making a holistic impact on student success. The program will address the academic, personal/social and college/career development of all students through individual, small group and school wide programs. Through these comprehensive services, the school counseling program will assist all children in reaching their highest potential, allowing them to feel confident in their ability to succeed as life-long learners.

WHY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COUNSELORS?

Elementary school years set the tone for developing the knowledge, attitudes and skill necessary for children to become healthy, competent and confident learners. School counselors work as a team with the school staff, parents and the community to create a caring climate and atmosphere. By providing education, prevention, early identification and intervention, school counselors can help all children achieve academic success.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS' DEVELOPMENTAL NEEDS

The elementary years are a time when students begin to develop their academic self-concept and their feelings of competence and confidence as learners. They are beginning to develop decision-making, communication and life skills, as well as character values. It is also a time when students develop and acquire attitudes toward school, self, peers, social groups and family. School counselors provide education, prevention and intervention services, which are integrated into all aspects of children’s lives. Early identification and intervention of children’s academic and personal/social needs is essential in removing barriers to learning and in promoting academic achievement. The knowledge, attitudes and skills that students acquire in the areas of academic, career and personal/social development during these elementary years serve as the foundation for future success.
